Disney Bets Big on Andor: Record-Breaking Budget Surpasses Star Wars Films

Cassian Andor is proving to be a solid investment for Disney, as new financial disclosures reveal that the company’s spending on the acclaimed Star Wars series, Andor, has reached a staggering $705.5 million. This figure includes an additional $60.5 million allocated for the highly anticipated second season, making Andor’s total expenditure exceed that of any Star Wars film to date.

Since the franchise was revitalized with The Force Awakens, which required a budget of $447 million and generated approximately $2.1 billion at the box office, the financial landscape has seen ups and downs. The follow-up films, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, recorded significantly lower earnings, bringing in $1.4 billion and $1.1 billion respectively. Meanwhile, various series launched under the Star Wars banner have struggled to capture audience enthusiasm, making Andor a standout project.

Since its debut in 2022, Andor has received critical acclaim, boasting an impressive 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season and a remarkable 97% for its upcoming second season, which is set to release after a three-year wait. This level of success makes Andor one of the few bright spots in the Star Wars franchise, following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm.

As the series concluded this May with no plans for continuation, both Seasons 1 and 2 remain available for streaming on Disney+. The combination of high production investment and critical praise indicates a strong return on investment, reflecting a shift toward a richer narrative within the Star Wars universe that resonates with audiences.
