Understanding Fiji’s maritime boundaries and the importance of fishing within designated zones is essential knowledge for all boat operators to adhere to fisheries laws and maintain safety at sea. This crucial point was emphasized by Captain Charles Pickering of the Pacific Center for Maritime Studies as he inaugurated a two-month Boat Master Class 6 training program in Labasa, attended by 45 participants from Vanua Levu.

The training covers vital aspects such as proper fish handling, from the moment of catch to storage. This initiative aims to equip maritime communities with practical skills that enhance safety, sustainability, and productivity in fishing practices. Captain Pickering noted that this training will be particularly beneficial for the participants, helping them expand their knowledge of maritime zones and navigation limits.

“They have had limited training in this area, so this provides them with opportunities to gain more knowledge and learn different fishing techniques through formal schooling. Not only within the three nautical mile limit but also beyond it. After they graduate, they will be qualified to operate vessels up to 15 meters in length and less than 20 gross tonnage,” he explained.

Trainer Mikaele Labalaba also highlighted the significance of understanding maritime laws and safe fishing management practices for small-scale fishers, emphasizing that this knowledge is essential for navigating interactions with larger vessels. “This training allows them to understand basic maritime laws, including which vessel should give way when a larger ship is approaching,” he said.

Notably, this marks the first instance of Class 6 license training being delivered at the community level in Fiji, signaling a significant advancement in local maritime education. Furthermore, similar training initiatives are anticipated to be rolled out in the Western and Central Divisions later this year, promising a comprehensive expansion of marine safety and fisheries management education across the nation.

This training represents not just a roadmap for compliance and safety, but also a pathway towards enhanced livelihoods for Fiji’s fishing communities, fostering a sustainable approach to their rich maritime resources.
