The Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly reached an agreement with free agent first baseman Carlos Santana, as confirmed by sources including Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. Following earlier reports by Jon Heyman of The New York Post indicating that negotiations were nearing completion, the pact is said to be a one-year contract, valued at approximately $2 million, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. With the Diamondbacks currently at a full 40-man roster, a corresponding move will be necessary once Santana completes his physical and the deal is officially finalized.
At 40 years old come April, Santana made his major league debut in 2010. Although he has never been recognized as a superstar, he has built a respectable career characterized by consistent performance. Throughout his time in the league, Santana has maintained robust strikeout and walk rates while showcasing solid power and defensive skills at first base. Over the course of more than 9,000 plate appearances, he boasts a walk rate of 14.4%, a strikeout rate of 16.6%, and a batting line of .241/.352/.425 for a 114 wRC+. Defensively, he has tallied 48 Defensive Runs Saved and 45 Outs Above Average in nearly 13,000 innings at first base.
As the Diamondbacks look to bolster their lineup, Santana’s experience and skill set could provide valuable contributions in the upcoming season. This strategic addition may enhance the team’s depth and performance on the field. Fans can look forward to developments as the deal is finalized.
