As Fiji advances its commitment to universal health coverage aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for 2030, Diabetes Fiji is advocating for the stronger inclusion of individuals living with diabetes, especially those with Type 1 diabetes, in national health decision-making processes.
Kini Marawa, Executive Director of Diabetes Fiji, has expressed concerns that people with diabetes remain one of the most vulnerable groups, often excluded from discussions that significantly impact their health and wellbeing. Marawa asserts that it is crucial for diabetics to be involved in decision-making, noting that meaningful participation is essential for Fiji to honor its commitment to universal health coverage.
The pledge of universal health coverage under SDG 2030 is centered on a fundamental promise: everyone should have access to healthcare, ensuring that no one is left behind. However, there are growing inquiries regarding whether this promise is effectively being upheld for individuals living with Type 1 diabetes.
Marawa highlights that while access to medication is critical, the care for those with Type 1 diabetes extends beyond mere treatment. He stresses that managing this lifelong condition necessitates ongoing, comprehensive support encompassing financial, medical, and social aspects. Continuous monitoring, insulin management, and consistent access to medical supplies are essential; without these supports, individuals risk facing heightened health complications and long-term effects.
