Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu highlighted the persistent challenge of high criminal activity levels, exacerbated by limited funding and resources for police operations. Speaking at the recent inauguration of the Denarau Police Post in Nadi, he emphasized the necessity for a collaborative approach to crime prevention involving authorities, communities, and the private sector.
Commissioner Tudravu pointed out that while there is a significant amount of criminal activity, financial constraints hinder the police’s ability to effectively combat it. He noted that the government has various competing priorities that affect resource allocation.
He commended Denarau Corporation Ltd for their financial support in establishing the new police post, underscoring the critical role of public-private partnerships in enhancing public safety. “It’s not just the police’s responsibility; it’s a joint effort to curb crime in Fiji,” he stated. This collaboration reflects a shift towards a more community-oriented approach to policing, where responsibility is shared rather than solely assigned to law enforcement.
Tudravu described the initiative as mutually beneficial, providing a return on investment for businesses through improved safety and services. He expressed hope that similar partnerships could be replicated in other regions to bolster crime prevention efforts.
The establishment of a police presence in Denarau was prompted by reports of criminal and drug-related incidents tied to local businesses. The Commissioner believes that the new police post will serve as a deterrent for individuals looking to exploit the island for illegal activities. A dedicated tourist police unit will operate from the post, offering 24-hour service to enhance security for both residents and visitors alike.
