David Byrne has released a new cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s hit single “Drivers License” to commemorate the fifth anniversary of its debut. This cover marks the beginning of a series where various artists will reinterpret tracks from Rodrigo’s acclaimed album, “Sour,” which fans can look forward to over the coming months.
Fans can now stream the Byrne recording on all digital service providers. In a special touch, the cover is also available on 7-inch vinyl, which features a live duet of “Burning Down the House,” performed by Byrne and Rodrigo at last year’s Governors Ball, as the B-side. Additionally, Target will offer a 4-inch vinyl edition of Byrne’s cover as part of their “Tiny Vinyl” series, pairing it with Rodrigo’s original “Drivers License.”
Both vinyl editions are available for pre-order now; the 7-inch will ship on April 3, while the Target version is anticipated to arrive by April 30. Collectors should note that the 7-inch will be released as “translucent ruby vinyl,” with the Target mini-disc coming in a “fruit punch vinyl” format.
The announcement of this cover has generated excitement among fans, many of whom hoped it might also give clues about Rodrigo’s upcoming third studio album, referred to by some as “OR3.” Although hints in the promotional material indicated this wasn’t the case, the series of covers celebrating the anniversary of “Sour” suggests that new music from Rodrigo may not arrive just yet. The full album was released on May 21, 2021, and it seems as though the rollout of tribute music will likely lead up to that date.
“Drivers License” has had an extraordinary impact, propelling Rodrigo into stardom and achieving a remarkable 4.7 billion streams worldwide across all platforms. The single has also achieved a six-times platinum certification from the RIAA. “Sour” is noteworthy for being the first album in Spotify history with four songs exceeding two billion streams each.
While Rodrigo is currently enjoying some downtime after her “Guts” tour, Byrne continues to tour in support of his recent album “Who Is the Sky?” Variety has lauded his concert in Los Angeles as the best of 2025. He is also set to revitalize his tour during the winter and spring seasons, alongside the upcoming opening of his Broadway musical “Here Lies Love” at the Mark Taper Forum in February. This intersection of legacy and new talent in the music world exemplifies the ongoing evolution of the industry, leaving fans eager for what comes next.
