Chief Justice Salesi Temo has urged newly admitted lawyers to contemplate a future in politics if they have a genuine desire to influence national leadership. Speaking at the Bar admission ceremony for 24 graduates from the University of Fiji’s School of Law, Justice Temo highlighted the pressing need for more legally trained individuals in Parliament.
In his remarks, Justice Temo encouraged the graduates, stating, “Some of you may want to go into politics. There is nothing wrong with that. Your understanding of the law and ability to interpret legislation will enhance our parliamentary processes.” He underscored the significant impact that legal expertise can have on parliamentary proceedings, advocating for the inclusion of lawyers in the legislative body to strengthen the upholding of legal standards and the amendment of laws.
The Chief Justice also emphasized the critical role of integrity and professionalism as these young lawyers start their careers. “As ambassadors for the legal profession, you must treat your clients with fairness and honesty,” he advised. He cautioned that a lawyer’s career could be severely impacted by a poor reputation, sharing that unethical conduct can lead to lawyers being barred from practice. Temo stressed that cultivating a solid reputation is crucial for success in the field, stating, “Your reputation will be shaped by how clients perceive your work. If you demonstrate hard work, fairness, and justice, your standing in the marketplace will flourish.”
Acknowledging the rewarding yet challenging nature of the legal profession, particularly in managing client relationships, Justice Temo reiterated the importance of ethics and integrity. He urged the new lawyers to build public trust in the legal system and to contribute positively to their communities as they embark on their legal journeys.
