The newly-formed Cadillac Formula 1 team has paid homage to racing icon Mario Andretti by naming its inaugural chassis after him, calling it the MAC-26, which stands for the “Mario Andretti Cadillac 26.” This tribute comes as Andretti prepares to celebrate his 86th birthday on Saturday. The esteemed driver, who won the world championship in 1978, serves as an ambassador for the team, which has its genesis tied to Michael Andretti’s previous efforts to join the Formula 1 circuit.
The Cadillac team emerged from the unsuccessful bid led by Andretti into what has since developed as the TWG Motorsports and General Motors initiative that aims to compete in the 2026 Formula 1 season. This transformation has been pivotal, reflecting the evolution of the team and its ambitions.
Expressing his gratitude, Andretti remarked, “Racing has been the joy of my life. It is the ultimate compliment that the Cadillac Formula 1 Team sees those years as meaningful and worthy of recording with this honor.” He expressed appreciation for the ongoing recognition of his contributions to racing history, underscoring his strong connection to Formula 1.
Cadillac’s Team Principal Graeme Lowdon emphasized Andretti’s legendary status in the racing world, describing him as not only a fierce competitor but also a person with a genuine heart. “Mario Andretti is a legend of Formula 1… At the start of my own journey with the team, he asked me not to let him down—I hope that he will be proud to see the Cadillac Formula 1 Team car bearing his name finally take to the grid.”
Fans can expect the MAC-26 to make its racing debut at the upcoming Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, marking a historic moment for both Cadillac and the rich legacy of Mario Andretti within the sport. This combination of heritage and innovation is likely to stir excitement as the team prepares to carve its path in the competitive world of Formula 1.
