Buckeyes Hope to Keep Guilford as Signing Day Approaches

The Ohio State football program is looking to build momentum as they approach Early Signing Day, especially after their recent victory over rivals Michigan. Currently, the Buckeyes boast the sixth-best recruiting class in the nation, yet this class is projected to be the lowest-rated under head coach Ryan Day since his first year in charge.

As they prepare for the upcoming signing period on Wednesday, the Buckeyes are looking to secure their recruits amidst efforts from other programs aiming to seize some of their top talent. Among those making a push is newly appointed LSU head coach Lane Kiffin, who has begun reaching out to Ohio State commitments.

One of Kiffin’s targets is Jerquaden Guilford, a four-star wide receiver from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Standing at 6’3″ and weighing 190 pounds, Guilford has been committed to Ohio State since July. Just days before signing, Kiffin extended an offer to Guilford, which appears to be a strategic move to lure him to LSU.

However, the timing of this offer — a mere two days before Signing Day — suggests a long shot for Kiffin, given Guilford’s commitment to Ohio State. The real turning point for Guilford could be the status of Ohio State’s receivers coach, Brian Hartline. If Hartline were to take another coaching position, it could open the door for Guilford to explore other options. As it stands, Hartline is considered one of the finest recruiters in the country and has a solid track record for retaining his wide receiver commitments.

With Signing Day fast approaching, Ohio State remains confident in their ability to hold onto Guilford and other prospective recruits. The loyalty of Ohio State’s recruits, particularly so close to Signing Day, suggests that even Kiffin’s flashy offers may not be enough to shift their commitment. The close-knit culture within the Buckeyes program seemingly strengthens their chances of securing a successful recruiting class despite the challenges they face.
