Bears face Steelers with injured linebackers as Johnson nears return

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for the potential return of standout cornerback Jaylon Johnson, but their hopes are tempered by significant injury concerns to the linebacker corps.

On Thursday, it was reported that none of the Bears’ top three linebackers — TJ Edwards, Tremaine Edmunds, and Noah Sewell — participated in practice for the second consecutive day. This raises serious doubts about their availability for the upcoming Week 12 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the likelihood of both Edmunds and Edwards missing Sunday’s game is increasing, while Sewell’s status remains uncertain.

Edmunds, who leads the team with 89 tackles, would be a critical loss for Chicago. His contributions also include four interceptions, ranking second on the team behind only Kevin Byard. The Bears will closely monitor his injury situation as they prepare for this crucial game.

Edwards has been sidelined since Week 9 due to a broken hand that required surgery, and now he is also grappling with a hamstring injury, further complicating his return. While the Bears have not placed him on injured reserve, which could indicate optimism regarding his recovery, the absence of both he and Edmunds would significantly hinder the team’s defensive strategies.

If Sewell, who has made strides this season with 55 tackles and a solid run defense grade, is also unable to play, the Bears would be left in a challenging position against a tough Steelers team.

Currently holding a 7-3 record, the Bears are aiming to solidify their status as serious playoff contenders. However, winning against Pittsburgh may prove to be a daunting task if their top linebackers cannot take the field. The situation requires a keen focus and adaptable strategy from the coaching staff to navigate these injury setbacks effectively.
