Richard Codey, the former governor of New Jersey and the state’s longest-serving lawmaker, has passed away at the age of 79. His family announced that he died peacefully at his home on Sunday morning after a brief illness. In a heartfelt Facebook post, the family expressed their deep loss, stating, “Our family has lost a beloved husband, father, and grandfather — and New Jersey lost a remarkable public servant who touched the lives of all who knew him.”
A member of the Democratic Party, Codey became acting governor of New Jersey after the resignation of Gov. Jim McGreevey in November 2004. He successfully completed McGreevey’s term, which concluded in 2006. During his extensive political career, which spanned nearly five decades, Codey was known for his humility, compassion, and his unwavering commitment to the people of New Jersey.
His family reflected on his character, noting that he “lived his life with humility, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility to others.” They further highlighted his ability to connect with everyone, from presidents to everyday citizens, saying he “made friends as easily with Presidents as he did with strangers in all-night diners.”
Codey’s political journey began in 1973 when he was first elected to the New Jersey State Legislature as an assemblyman representing Essex and Morris counties. He moved on to serve as a state senator from 1984 until his retirement in 2024, returning to the senate after his gubernatorial term ended. U.S. Senator Andy Kim commended Codey’s legacy, emphasizing his dedication to service, particularly during unexpected times, and how his values contributed to making New Jersey a better place.
Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. also paid tribute to Codey, recognizing him as a prominent figure in the state for over 50 years and praising his effectiveness in advocating for his constituents. “I am glad that we dedicated Codey Arena in his honor in 2005 while he was alive so that he could see how much people appreciated him and the impact he had,” DiVincenzo stated.
The Union County Board of Commissioners praised Codey’s unwavering integrity, compassion, and commitment to vulnerable populations. They remarked, “His leadership, humility, and courage left a lasting mark on our state and set an example for generations of public servants.”
