Arizona Women Race to 3-0 Start as Nation-Leading Assists Spark 85-64 Win

The Arizona women’s basketball team achieved a significant victory over Grambling State, winning 85-64 on Sunday at the McKale Center, securing their third consecutive win of the season.

Leading the Wildcats were Mickayla Perdue and freshman Daniah Trammell, each scoring 15 points, marking their third consecutive game with double-digit points. Junior guard Sumayah Sugapong contributed 13 points, inching closer to her milestone of 1,000 career points. Off the bench, junior Tanyuel Welch added 12 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while freshman Mireia Jurado matched her in rebounds, showcasing depth and strength during the game.

The team’s performance echoed a well-rounded effort with four players scoring in double figures and noticeable contributions from all players on the court. Guard Noelani Cornfield excelled in facilitating the offense, dishing out 10 assists with only one turnover, making it her second straight game with double-digit assists. She is now leading the nation in assists per game at 10.0, a feat that hasn’t been achieved by an Arizona women’s basketball player in over two decades.

Defensively, Arizona’s strategy proved effective, as they limited the Tigers to just 35% shooting from the field and forced 17 turnovers. The Wildcats asserted dominance in the painted area, outscoring their opponents by 30 points inside.

After trailing by nine points after the first quarter, Arizona rebounded to establish a commanding lead, reaching a 26-point advantage early in the fourth quarter during a remarkable 14-0 scoring run.

With their record now at 3-0, the Wildcats will face Northern Arizona in their next match on Friday, November 21, at the McKale Center at 6 p.m. MST. This game will honor former player Aari McDonald, with the action set to stream live on ESPN+.
