The Georgia Lottery announced on January 6 that the winner of the $983 million Mega Millions jackpot from the November 14 drawing has officially come forward to claim their prize. The fortunate individual, who has chosen to remain anonymous in accordance with Georgia law, opted for the cash option, amounting to $453.6 million before taxes.
In a press statement, Georgia Lottery Corp. President and CEO Gretchen Corbin expressed excitement about the historic win, emphasizing the positive impact on the community. “We are thrilled to celebrate Georgia’s record-breaking jackpot winner and their life-changing start to the new year,” Corbin stated. The winnings not only benefit the winner but also contribute to the state’s HOPE Scholarship program, which supports education for students and families throughout Georgia.
The winning numbers for the Mega Millions drawing were 1-8-11-12-57, with the Mega Ball being 7. This payout surpasses the previous Georgia record set during the Powerball drawing on October 23, 2024, where a ticket sold in Buford led to a winning amount of $478.2 million. The Georgia Lottery noted that all draw game tickets remain valid for 180 days following the draw date.
Despite remaining private, the winner shared that they have family members who have benefited from the Georgia Lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship. The decision to purchase the winning ticket was inspired by seeing the jackpot advertised on a Georgia Lottery billboard. The winner expressed a desire to ensure their prize would have a lasting impact, stating they plan to make their winnings “generational” and have intentions to support good causes.
The winning ticket was purchased at a Publix grocery store in Newnan, Georgia, which will receive a $50,000 retailer incentive bonus for the sale. This major win exemplifies how lottery participation can profoundly change lives and underscores the importance of community support through educational funding.
