The Minnesota Vikings have officially parted ways with veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen for the second time, following his request to finish his career with a competitive team. The 35-year-old made his intentions clear as the team confirmed the news through social media on Monday.
Thielen expressed his desire to conclude his NFL journey by competing in the league’s final weeks, signaling that this will indeed be his last season. While he did not expressly state his aspirations, it is evident that he is seeking a chance to contend for a Super Bowl, which appears unlikely with the current state of the Vikings. The team, having faltered to a disappointing 4-8 record this season due to various issues, including subpar quarterback play, seems to have no playoff prospects.
Throughout the season, Thielen has had limited involvement in the Vikings’ offense, accumulating just eight receptions for 69 yards over 11 games. Despite this, he could still offer valuable depth to a competing team as the playoffs draw near, although starting roles may be hard to come by.
Reflecting on his career, Thielen has been a significant figure for the Vikings. From 2016 to 2022, he averaged close to 1,000 receiving yards and 7.7 touchdowns each season, earning two Pro Bowl selections and a 2017 second-team All-Pro nod. While his production declined in recent years, he showcased remarkable talent by catching 14 touchdowns in 2020 and 10 in 2021, despite limited appearances.
After his time with the Vikings, Thielen joined the Carolina Panthers on a three-year contract and produced over 1,000 receiving yards in his first season. However, following a challenging 2024 season, he was traded back to the Vikings through a draft-pick exchange. Struggling to find his footing in Minnesota’s crowded receiving corps featuring stars like Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, Thielen’s impact has been minimal.
With the right opportunity, Thielen could still realize his dream of vying for a championship before he retires. A last-minute injury on a competing team could also provide him with one final shot at a Super Bowl title, adding a layer of excitement to his departure from the Vikings. As he embarks on this new chapter, hope remains that Thielen can still make a meaningful impact on another squad as he aims to close out his illustrious football career on a high note.
