Twelve-year-old Medine Ocak has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of unimaginable tragedy following the devastating earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023. After losing both of her legs and her father during the disaster, Medine has found solace and purpose in swimming, a sport she took up while receiving treatment in Kayseri.
Each week, Medine travels one and a half hours six days a week to attend her swimming lessons, navigating the challenges of life with her prosthetic legs. Her determination doesn’t stop there; she has expressed a heartfelt ambition to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games, where she hopes to win a medal and dedicate it to her late father, who tragically perished while attempting to protect Medine and her siblings during the earthquake.
On that fateful day, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake leveled her family’s building on Trabzon Street, trapping Medine under the wreckage for over 13 hours along with her three siblings. Their rescue came at the hands of relatives, but sadly, their father was discovered lifeless five days later. Following the harrowing incident, Medine was hospitalized at Kayseri City Hospital, where she underwent surgery that led to the amputation of both legs.
Now, Medine is seeking assistance from authorities for new prosthetic legs that would enable her to run and continue overcoming the physical limitations imposed by her circumstances.
