Twenty-year-old Timoci Matanimeke, convicted for the brutal murder of 60-year-old Nitya Nand, is set to learn his sentencing fate on Christmas Eve this year. Matanimeke was found guilty earlier this week of murder, aggravated robbery, and criminal trespass following a violent incident that took place in Nand’s home in Samabula, Suva, on Christmas Eve in 2023.

The court proceedings revealed that Matanimeke had entered Nand’s residence with the intent to commit robbery. During this attack, he violently struck Nand multiple times with a chopper, ultimately leading to the victim’s death from his injuries on January 5, 2024. In addition to the assault, Matanimeke stole a Samsung mobile phone and a pair of safety boots from the home.

At the sentencing hearing, the state counsel urged for a 20-year prison sentence, emphasizing the brutality of the attack and the premeditated nature of the crime. Evidence demonstrated that Matanimeke had been observed in the vicinity on two occasions prior to the murder, suggesting careful planning. Furthermore, the prosecutors pointed out that Matanimeke exhibited no remorse for his actions, reinforcing the severity of the offense.

In contrast, Matanimeke’s defense counsel argued for leniency, highlighting that he was only 18 years old at the time of the crime. They requested the court to consider alternative sentencing options, including the time he has spent in remand since his arrest.

The Suva High Court is expected to deliver its sentence for Matanimeke next Wednesday, as the community awaits the outcome of this tragic case, which highlights the importance of justice and the ongoing conversation around the impact of violent crime in society.
