Notably, Nintendo’s stock has dropped 30% in the past six months due to price hikes in DRAM, while PlayStation has also reported declines in hardware sales this year.

In contrast to these struggles, Steam and PC gaming have experienced notable growth. The shift toward digital platforms has attracted younger gamers eager to replicate the experiences of online streamers and take advantage of modding tools, sales promotions, and a variety of PC gaming benefits. Recognizing this trend, Microsoft has been expanding its presence in the PC sphere with Xbox Game Pass, the Xbox PC store, and devices like the Xbox Ally.

Cloud gaming, in particular, has gained momentum and is poised for further expansion. Recently, users noticed a new message during their gaming sessions on Xbox Cloud Gaming: “1 hour of ad-supported play time per session.” While some speculated that this indicated a shift toward ads across all tiers, sources confirm that this might be an error. Instead, advertisements are likely to appear on Xbox Cloud Gaming for users who own games digitally but do not subscribe to Xbox Game Pass. This new ad-supported access tier could open doors to hundreds of games in the cloud without a subscription.

The conversation around ads in Xbox Cloud Gaming has become more pronounced due to rising component costs in local gaming hardware, influenced by increased demand in the AI sector. As prices for components like DRAM and SSDs rise, services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA GeForce Now are viewed as potential remedies for gamers unable to afford local hardware. However, cloud gaming also faces its own cost structures, as maintaining these services requires significant investment in infrastructure.

To capitalize on idle cloud compute resources, Microsoft is reportedly considering using Azure for free Xbox Cloud Gaming services supported by ads. This strategy would ensure sustained utilization of server capacity, justify further investments in infrastructure, and solidify Xbox’s future in a landscape increasingly dominated by cloud technology and artificial intelligence.

While the rollout of these changes has not been specified, it is expected to occur within this year. Xbox Cloud Gaming has experienced double-digit growth, particularly in regions where economic barriers make purchasing traditional gaming hardware challenging. For instance, Microsoft introduced Xbox Cloud Gaming in India last year and is exploring expansion into other markets across Asia and Africa. Furthermore, for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, the service now allows streaming of certain games at enhanced 1440p resolutions, further enhancing the gaming experience.
