Xbox 360 Turns 20: The Call of Duty Dominance Behind Its Top Games

This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of the Xbox 360, the second iteration in Microsoft’s successful line of gaming consoles. The console boasts a rich library of games, but a standout feature is the dominance of the Call of Duty franchise among its top titles. According to Mat Piscatella from Circana, an astonishing seven out of the top 20 best-selling Xbox 360 games in the U.S. are from Call of Duty. Notably, six of these titles rank in the top 10, and four clinched spots in the top five.

In addition to Call of Duty, three games from the Halo franchise and two from Gears of War also made the coveted list, alongside timeless hits like Minecraft and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. With Microsoft’s acquisitions of Bethesda, Activision, and Mojang Studios, the tech giant now holds the rights to 17 of the titles featured in the top 20.

Outside of Microsoft’s portfolio, Rockstar Games made its mark with two critically acclaimed entries: Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto IV. Meanwhile, EA’s Battlefield 3 stands as the publisher’s only representation on this prestigious list.

Reflecting on the competitive landscape of that era, Peter Moore, the former Microsoft executive who played a pivotal role in promoting the Xbox and Xbox 360, recently provided insights on the console’s rivalry with the PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 remains one of Microsoft’s most significant accomplishments in the gaming industry. Although the Xbox 360 store was officially shut down last year, Microsoft is continuing to support the system, having released an update in June 2025.

The complete list of the top 20 best-selling Xbox 360 games in the U.S. showcases the enduring popularity and legacy of these titles, many of which are still accessible via the Xbox Store for new and returning players alike. This anniversary not only celebrates the games but also highlights the impact the Xbox 360 had on shaping the gaming landscape.
