Wolverines edge TCU as frontcourt duo shines with double-doubles

FORT WORTH, Texas — The sixth-ranked University of Michigan men’s basketball team secured a hard-fought 67-63 victory over TCU on Friday night (Nov. 14) at the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena, thanks to impressive double-doubles from their frontcourt stars, Morez Johnson Jr. and Yaxel Lendeborg.

In a standout performance, Lendeborg recorded his first double-double of the season, contributing 14 points and 10 rebounds while shooting an efficient 4-for-6 from the field. Johnson complemented him with his second double-double, tallying 10 points along with 12 rebounds and two blocks. The Wolverines also saw significant contributions from Trey McKenney, who added 11 points off the bench, and Roddy Gayle Jr., who scored 10 points and dished out six assists.

The game showcased a thrilling second half where the Wolverines rallied to reclaim control. TCU managed to maintain its lead early in the second period, extending the margin to six points at 49-43. However, Michigan began to close the gap, pulling within two points at 49-47 by the under-eight media timeout. Lendeborg’s putback and an and-one from McKenney helped shift the momentum, allowing Michigan to take the lead at 52-51.

As the final minutes approached, the Wolverines continued to build on their advantage, with a crucial layup from Johnson extending the lead to 54-51. Despite TCU’s late-game push, highlighted by a 5-0 run that brought them within two points, Michigan held their composure. Nimari Burnett stepped up with a steal and then made both free throws with only 18 seconds left, solidifying the victory.

In the first half, TCU’s aggressive style and quicker lineup caused early turnovers for Michigan, which allowed the Horned Frogs to establish a 16-8 lead during a challenging stretch for the Wolverines, who experienced a five-minute scoring drought. Nonetheless, Lendeborg’s quick scoring spurt and Elliot Cadeau’s transition three energized Michigan, helping them briefly take the lead. The teams exchanged baskets as the first half concluded with Michigan trailing by just two points at 35-33, remaining competitive going into halftime.

The Wolverines will look to build on this momentum after two games away from home, returning to Crisler Center on Wednesday (Nov. 19) for a matchup against the undefeated Middle Tennessee. The game is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. and will celebrate Military Appreciation Night. Fans can catch the action live on the Big Ten Network.

Noteworthy mentions include Lendeborg surpassing the 800-rebound mark in his Division I career and Gayle achieving six assists, surpassing five assists in a game for the tenth time during his career. With consistent contributions from their roster, including strong performances in all three games of the season, Michigan is poised for continued success as the season unfolds.
