Winter Storm Forces CIAC to Postpone 24 Football Playoff Games

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) convened to address potential weather impacts on the upcoming 2025 football quarterfinals, originally set for Tuesday, December 1, 2025. Given the forecast of inclement weather, the CIAC decided to postpone all 24 playoff games to Wednesday to ensure fairness and player safety.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch on Sunday, predicting several inches of snow in Litchfield County while other regions may experience a mix of snow and rain. Meteorologist Dan Amarante emphasized the challenging weather conditions expected in Hartford, where morning snow may transition to sleet and rain due to warmer temperatures moving in from the south. In contrast, areas in Litchfield County could encounter significant snowfall, marking what might be the first plowable snow of the season.

This decision reflects the CIAC’s commitment to equal competition, opting not to have games played on separate days in adverse weather. Consequently, the semifinals have been rescheduled from Sunday to Monday night, December 8, at 6:30 p.m.

While the championship finals remain planned for Saturday, December 13, at both Rentschler Field’s Pratt & Whitney Stadium and Central Connecticut State University’s Arute Field in New Britain, the finals previously scheduled for Friday, December 12, have now been shifted to Saturday to accommodate the new timeline.

CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini noted that the revised schedule allows only two games to be conducted at each venue on that day, ensuring a well-organized and fair competition as teams advance through the playoff stages. The adjustments made reflect the CIAC’s dedication to supporting student-athletes and maintaining the integrity of the tournament amidst weather-related challenges.
