As India gears up for their critical T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final against England at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, the discussion surrounding the composition of the top order is heating up. Former Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik has expressed his support for the young talent Abhishek Sharma, who has struggled to replicate his pre-tournament form during the World Cup. Karthik urged the team management, led by Gautam Gambhir, to retain their faith in the explosive left-handed opener.

India’s journey through the tournament has been marked by various tactical adjustments. Initially, the team built a top order heavy with left-handers, a strategy that faced challenges against off-spin bowling, particularly during the Powerplay. This struggle prompted a reassessment of their lineup ahead of a critical Super 8 match against Zimbabwe, where Sanju Samson was elevated to open alongside Abhishek Sharma.

This lineup change demonstrated immediate results, but Abhishek’s performance has raised concerns. He suffered three consecutive ducks during the group stages and, despite a valiant 55 against Zimbabwe, managed only 10 runs in the crucial do-or-die match against the West Indies. Had it not been for Samson’s outstanding 97, India’s chances of making it to the semi-finals could have been jeopardized.

In a discussion with NDTV, Karthik dismissed calls to bench Abhishek for the semi-final clash with England. He argued that the strategic benefits of maintaining a left-right opening partnership surpass recent individual performance dips. “In a big tournament like a World Cup, you have to trust the players who got you there. I believe they need to stick with Abhishek, Sanju, and Ishan Kishan. This gives them the best chance of success on the big day,” Karthik stated during the JioStar Media Day ahead of the anticipated match.

While Abhishek faces scrutiny, his opening partner Sanju Samson has proven his worth, notably with a “Kohli-esque” performance against the West Indies that featured an unbeaten 97, securing India’s place in the semi-finals.

As they prepare for this intense match, England’s Sam Curran acknowledged respect for Abhishek’s capabilities, recalling the explosive 37-ball century the young player scored against them in their recent bilateral series prior to the World Cup.

Fans and cricket enthusiasts can look forward to an electrifying encounter as India aims to make history in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The match against England will be broadcast live today at 7:00 PM on JioHotstar and Star Sports Network.
