The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has addressed concerns surrounding recent flooding at the Naqiliso informal settlement, attributing the issue primarily to illegal dumping of rubbish and wastewater by residents rather than construction activities at the nearby Nasinu Cemetery. In an official statement, the FCS refuted online claims suggesting that their construction project was responsible for the flooding.
FCS highlighted that residents have been discharging household waste directly onto their property, which lies in a low-lying area. This longstanding practice has resulted in accumulated waste, obstructing natural drainage pathways. The construction of a new access road within FCS’s legal boundaries has helped prevent further illegal wastewater flow into its compound, inadvertently leading to ponding issues within the settlement itself.
Furthermore, FCS pointed out that the settlement lacks a proper drainage system, with waste, including sewage, pooling in drains clogged with plastics and other debris. The service also identified that some residential homes and bathroom pipes have encroached upon FCS land, prompting the Lands Department to issue a 30-day notice for residents to remove such encroachments. With that notice period now expired, an additional 14-day notice has been communicated before further action is deemed necessary.
Once these encroachments are resolved, the FCS plans to enhance the drainage system to alleviate flooding issues. They assured that all construction permits were secured prior to the commencement of work, with operations conducted within approved boundaries and specifications.
Moreover, FCS intends to collaborate with health authorities to clear longstanding rubbish within its compound, including old appliances, roofing materials, and plastics contributing to the blockage. The organization is also partnering with the Fiji Roads Authority and the Lands Department to formulate a long-term strategy addressing issues related to bordering Government Roads Reserve land.
In light of the situation, the Fiji Corrections Service has urged the media to seek further clarification to ensure accurate and balanced reporting, emphasizing their commitment to engaging with local communities for their safety and well-being during this project.
