Concerns raised by the International Women’s Association regarding a water leak at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital Antenatal Clinic have prompted immediate action from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. The issue was highlighted by the Association’s President, Judy Compain, who emphasized the potential risks to patient safety and the impact on service delivery.

The Ministry confirmed that the leak was detected yesterday, and hospital management took swift action to investigate and rectify the situation. An assessment by the hospital’s maintenance team, overseen by the Medical Superintendent, revealed that the leak originated from an old drainage pipe that had been sealed during previous renovations of the maternity washrooms. Over time, the seal weakened, leading to the water leakage.

Repairs to the damaged pipe have been successfully completed, and the impacted area has been cleaned and restored. The Ministry has assured the public that the antenatal clinic is now safe, fully operational, and ready to welcome patients once again.

In response to this incident, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, has initiated a thorough investigation to confirm the initial findings and evaluate long-term solutions. A temporary suspension of any future renovation work by the involved contractors has also been mandated until the investigation concludes.

The Ministry of Health reiterated its commitment to patient safety and the enhancement of health infrastructure national-wide. They expressed gratitude to the public and partner organizations for their vigilance and extended apologies for any inconvenience experienced by staff and patients. The Colonial War Memorial Hospital Antenatal Clinic remains dedicated to providing care and support for mothers and expectant mothers.
