Wagner Moura’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Series at the 31st Critics Choice Awards came as one of the event’s highlights, recognizing his performance in the Apple TV+ miniseries “Ladrões de drogas.” In addition to this nomination, Moura is also in the running for Best Actor for his role in the film “O agente secreto,” directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho.
Despite his critical acclaim, Moura did not win the award, which went to Owen Cooper for his work in “Adolescência.” The category featured strong contenders including Nick Offerman from “Death by Lightning,” Michael Peña from “All Her Fault,” Ashley Walters, also from “Adolescência,” and Ramy Youssef from “Mountainhead.”
The awards ceremony took place on January 4 in Santa Monica, California, and was hosted by actress and comedian Chelsea Handler. The film “Pecadores,” directed by Ryan Coogler, led the night with a staggering 17 nominations, followed by “Uma batalha após a outra” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson with 14, and Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet,” which each garnered 11 nominations.
The Critics Choice Awards introduced four new categories this year: Best Variety Series, Stunt Coordination, Casting, and Sound, reflecting its evolving approach to recognizing excellence in television and film.
Although the Critics Choice Awards serve as a significant precursor to the Oscars, which will take place on March 15, it’s important to note that most voters in this award show are based in the United States and Canada. This geographical bias may put Brazilian productions like Moura’s at a disadvantage in the competition. However, Moura’s nominations are a testament to his talent and the growing recognition of Brazilian cinema on international stages. These acknowledgments not only celebrate individual artists but also contribute to a broader appreciation of diverse storytelling in global film and television.
