Estrella is recovering from a bone bruise in his left knee, which he sustained during a game against Rice last week, while Boswell is returning from a foot injury and subsequent hamstring issues that sidelined him for three games. Head coach Rick Barnes mentioned that both players may be on a minutes restriction as they work their way back into the lineup.
“Boswell did a little bit in practice yesterday, and I think he will be able to play some,” Barnes stated, expressing cautious optimism about their recoveries. In contrast, Phillips missed Saturday’s practice due to flu symptoms but returned to team activities on Sunday. Barnes confirmed Phillips felt significantly better and was observing the team’s game plan.
Tennessee’s schedule in the Players Era Men’s Championship includes facing No. 2 Houston and one additional opponent in the following days. Barnes had previously hinted that Estrella’s return could occur within a couple of weeks but emphasized that the decision would rely on the player’s comfort level.
Both players’ progress is being monitored closely, with a Tennessee spokesperson noting they have been evaluated on a day-to-day basis. Boswell has faced challenges since missing games against Rice and North Florida, and Estrella’s knee injury raised initial concerns. However, coaches expressed relief that Estrella avoided a more serious injury.
Estrella had a standout performance before his injury, averaging 17.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in limited playing time this season. He had recently achieved a career-high of 23 points against North Florida prior to his injury, showcasing his potential impact on the court.
Barnes remains focused on ensuring both players return to full form without risking lingering issues. “We’ve got to get [Boswell] right,” he affirmed, underlining the importance of proper recovery.
