Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka celebrated a historic occasion as part of the land designated as NG 187 was officially returned to the original landowning units of Vitogo Village. During the reversion ceremony, Rabuka expressed that the perseverance and commitment of all parties involved had culminated in this long-anticipated event.
Reflecting on the arduous journey to this moment, Rabuka noted, “However, here we are, at the end of the journey, still standing and still believing that with perseverance, nothing is impossible.” He underscored a significant Cabinet decision made in 1999 that initiated the process for the return of part of NG 187 to its rightful owners and highlighted the impressive turnout of descendants from these landowning units, which served as a proud testament to the community’s resilience.
The Prime Minister paid homage to those who had championed this cause in the past, stating, “I wish to acknowledge and pay tribute to those who have gone before us and who initiated and were part of this journey of a dream come true. May their souls rest in peace.” The land’s return was justified by the conclusion that it was no longer needed for its original public purpose, as verified by the Cabinet’s resolution. Rabuka also mentioned that compensation had been appropriately provided to landowners for the expansion of the Tavakubu Cemetery, which spans 25 acres.
Furthermore, Rabuka announced that lands previously leased under the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the Fiji Pine Commission will now be managed by the iTaukei Land Trust Board. The formalization of this land return, following the recent approval of the survey plan and relevant Cabinet decisions, marks a significant milestone after 25 years since the initial Cabinet approval in 1999, and 102 years since the Colonial Government acquired NG 187.
This moment signifies not only the restoration of land but also the renewal of cultural and historical connections, highlighting the importance of community and legacy. It represents a hopeful milestone for the Vitogo Village community and embodies the enduring spirit of the people who have diligently pursued the reclamation of their ancestral territories. This development paves the way for further cultural revitalization and strengthens the bond between the community and its heritage.
