A confrontation at a Smoothie King in Ann Arbor, Michigan has led to the firing of two employees after a couple claimed they were denied service due to a pro-Trump hoodie worn by one of them. Erika and Jake Lindemyer recorded their exchange with the employees, which quickly gained traction on social media after being shared in a viral video.

During the incident, the employees expressed discomfort in serving the couple based on Jake’s hoodie, which prompted Erika to voice her disbelief and assert that they were facing discrimination. The heated exchange escalated as both employees insisted on their right to refuse service, stating a preference not to serve the couple.

Erika maintained that refusing them a smoothie based on political views constituted illegal discrimination, while the workers defended their stance, referencing their feelings towards Trump. The couple soon left the store after being told they had to exit.

Following the incident, one of the employees jokingly mentioned in a separate video that she may have “accidentally started a race war,” and appealed to the public to help remove Erika’s recording, citing her age and concerns about the negative attention the incident generated.

In response to the viral incident, Smoothie King confirmed that both employees involved are no longer part of the franchise and emphasized the brand’s commitment to maintaining an environment free from discrimination. Additionally, the owner of the franchise location stated they would implement mandatory retraining for all employees on guest experience standards.

This occurrence follows similar incidents where customer interactions at various businesses sparked debates surrounding political apparel and discrimination, highlighting the heightened sensitivity some individuals feel regarding political expressions in public spaces. It serves as a reminder of our diverse opinions and the critical need for respectful engagement, even in the face of disagreement.
