While the festive week of Christmas typically increases trade opportunities for interior farmers, 42-year-old Nai Vuniwaiwai highlights significant challenges faced by traveling vendors due to inadequate infrastructure at the Lautoka minibus stand. Ms. Vuniwaiwai and her group of vendors embarked on their journey from Naveiveiwali, Wainibuka in Tailevu at 10 PM on Sunday, arriving in Lautoka on Monday only to encounter dismal conditions and a lack of shelter amid rainy weather.
“We arrived in Lautoka on Monday, and we timed the bad weather; there was nothing organised for us, not even a makeshift shelter,” Ms. Vuniwaiwai shared. This left the vendors in a difficult situation, as they had to share space with others rather than having a dedicated area for their needs. The group expressed frustration, stating they were unable to secure spots in the main market, where selling opportunities are reserved for more established vendors.
“We wanted to go to the market, but we were told it’s only for the more established vendors, that’s why we were selling at the minibus stand,” she explained. The vendors, offering a variety of commodities like melons, dalo, rourou, kumala, cassava, and chilies, were compelled to sleep outdoors to keep their produce safe.
“Although we could have taken shelter at the mall, we were worried about our produce, so we ended up sleeping beside our bags and produce,” Ms. Vuniwaiwai elaborated. However, the high demand for fresh produce in Lautoka makes the lengthy journey worthwhile for these farmers, despite the adverse conditions they face.
“We get a lot of good business selling here, that’s why we’ve travelled from Tailevu to be here. We only request that we be given a better place to sell,” she said, calling for improved accommodations and recognition from the local council. She emphasized the need for the council to understand the vendors usually arrive at this time of year, particularly during the festive season, stressing the importance of a supportive selling environment.
This situation underscores the resilience of local farmers and the critical need for infrastructure improvements to support their vital role in the local economy, particularly during peak times when fresh produce is in high demand. By addressing these issues, Lautoka could foster a more inclusive environment for all vendors, enhancing their ability to contribute to the community during festive periods.
