Residents in Nasinu have been reassured that the initiative for a public recreational area is still a priority, despite current assessments considering Valelevu Ground as a potential location for a new national hospital. Maciu Naulumisa, the Minister for Local Government, emphasized that while Valelevu Ground had initially been designated for recreational purposes, the Nasinu Town Council recognizes the importance of the hospital project for the broader community.
According to Naulumisa, the Ministry of Health has commissioned consultants to evaluate various locations, with Valelevu Ground selected for further analysis due to its logistical advantages. He acknowledged that while this site is being evaluated for significant national development, the Nasinu Town Council is proactively searching for alternative locations to ensure that local residents have access to recreational facilities.
Valelevu Ground has seen its fair share of development proposals over the years. In 2015, the site was earmarked as a potential venue for an international stadium. Furthermore, Naulumisa noted that earlier this year, discussions arose about a dual commercial and recreational development plan, as the ground was reported to be operating at a loss.
The Minister reiterated the importance of finding a balance between national infrastructure demands and the provision of community spaces, underscoring that ongoing consultations are critical to this effort. The commitment to serve both the infrastructural needs of the country and the recreational desires of the local populace highlights a thoughtful approach to development in Nasinu.
