Motuopua’a Henny Papalii, the Member of Parliament for Vaisigano No.2, officially tendered his resignation from parliament on Tuesday to join the Fa’atuaatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) Party. This significant move is set to instigate a by-election, where Motuopua’a will contest under the FAST banner.

During his farewell address to parliament, Motuopua’a expressed that his decision reflects the wishes of his constituency. He stated, “I am your servant that you voted for, prayers and support are needed from you as I am ready to leave this seat and go back to a by-election as the law says.” He emphasized his commitment to obey the legal requirements and to serve his constituents faithfully.

Motuopua’a also took the opportunity to thank his constituency for their guidance during his time as their MP, apologizing for any shortcomings during his tenure. “Obeying you is obeying justice and God; may God bless the Parliament of Samoa,” he added.

Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt responded to the news with acknowledgment of Motuopua’a’s vision and aspirations, wishing him luck as he navigates the upcoming electoral process. He remarked on the weight of the decision, indicating that transitioning to a new role and heading back to the polls is not an easy path.

The Speaker of Parliament, Auapa’au Mulipola Aloitafua, also expressed appreciation for Motuopua’a’s service, wishing him success in his future endeavors.

Motuopua’a, who was elected during the general elections in August of the previous year, made his induction into the FAST Party just last Saturday, a move celebrated by his constituency members. This transition not only reflects a personal journey for Motuopua’a but also signals a broader political shift within Samoan governance, demonstrating the dynamic nature of its parliamentary landscape.
