The United States military has confirmed the downing of an Iranian drone that approached the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea. This incident comes amid ongoing efforts by various regional parties to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Tim Hawkins stated that an F-35C fighter jet, operating from the aircraft carrier, shot down the Shahed-139 drone in self-defense to ensure the safety of the vessel and its crew. The drone aggressively approached the carrier while operating approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles) from Iran’s southern coast, despite de-escalatory actions from US forces in international waters.
As of now, there has been no official response from Iranian authorities regarding the incident. This development arrives at a time when diplomatic efforts seem to be gaining traction between Tehran and Washington. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that he had instructed the foreign minister to pursue equitable negotiations, emphasizing that discussions should occur in a “suitable environment” without threats or unreasonable demands.
Scheduled talks between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian representatives are expected to take place this Friday, although the meeting’s location has yet to be confirmed. The nature of the discussions remains somewhat ambiguous; Iranian officials wish to concentrate on the nuclear program, while the US aims to address a broader array of concerns, including Iran’s relationships with regional armed groups, as well as its missile and defense capabilities.
Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, indicated that despite the drone incident, the planned negotiations are still set to proceed. The Iranian side has expressed a willingness to engage in talks, conditional upon the cessation of US threats.
In a related development, CENTCOM has accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of aggressive behavior towards a US-flagged merchant vessel in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. According to Hawkins, two IRGC boats and an Iranian Mohajer drone attempted to close in on the M/V Stena Imperative at high speeds, threatening to board the tanker. Iranian sources, however, asserted that the vessel had entered Iranian territorial waters without the necessary permits and left the area without incident.
