Filimone Jitoko has officially assumed the role of chancellor at the University of Fiji, a significant milestone celebrated during the university’s graduation ceremony at the Saweni campus this week. In his inaugural address, Jitoko reaffirmed his commitment to performing his duties in accordance with the university’s Act, underscoring the values of fairness, wisdom, and impartiality essential for advancing academic excellence, research, and community service.
“The University of Fiji is not merely an institution for learning; it is a pivotal center of knowledge that nurtures future leaders capable of navigating the vast ocean we refer to as Pasifika,” Jitoko stated, emphasizing the university’s crucial role in fostering leadership within the region. He motivated the graduates by declaring, “Your degree is not an endpoint; it is merely the beginning of your journey of service to this country, the Pacific, and beyond.”
Vice Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem extended a warm welcome to Jitoko in his new capacity, commending his extensive experience as both the Honourable Speaker of Parliament and a former judge. She expressed confidence that his legal background and public service experience would substantially enhance the university community.
Professor Shameem also voiced her hope that Jitoko would actively engage with the university, despite the ceremonial nature of his position. “While yours, by convention, Sir, is a titular role, I sincerely hope you will find the opportunity to visit the university as often as possible and partake in our various events and functions,” she remarked, humorously recognizing the vibrant spirit of the university during sports activities.
Jitoko’s appointment as chancellor signifies a bright future for the University of Fiji, reinforcing its mission to empower students and shape a new generation of leaders dedicated to serving the region. This development marks a hopeful chapter for both the institution and its students as they look toward a future filled with potential and opportunity.
