The Marquette women’s basketball team faced a challenging match against the top-ranked Connecticut Huskies on December 17 at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut. From the start, the Huskies dominated the game, taking a significant lead of 27-12 by the end of the first quarter and ultimately securing an 89-53 victory.
Sarah Strong emerged as a standout player for the Huskies, scoring 22 points and contributing to a balanced attack that saw four teammates finish in double figures. For the Golden Eagles, Skylar Forbes led the scoring with 17 points, while the rest of the team struggled to reach double digits in scoring.
Prior to this match, Marquette had a solid reputation for their three-point shooting, ranking fifth in the nation with an impressive 39.9% success rate. However, against UConn, the Golden Eagles’ shooting from beyond the arc fell short, making just 5 of 16 attempts.
With this win, the Huskies extended their historical advantage in the series to 23-1, with Marquette’s only victory occurring on February 8, 2023, at the Al McGuire Center. While this defeat highlights areas for improvement for Marquette, it also serves as a learning experience to help the team grow as they continue in the season. The Golden Eagles will look to rebound in their upcoming games, maintaining their competitive spirit.
