Two men charged in Fiji violent robbery targeting government officials; third suspect at large

Two men were brought before the Savusavu Magistrates Court today in connection with a violent robbery that occurred last week against government officials in Vusasivo, Cakaudrove. Kavireli Waqa and Sairusi Lebaivalu each face multiple charges, including five counts of aggravated robbery and one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.

The suspects were apprehended following allegations that they attacked and robbed a team of government officials during their field visit to the area. Currently, both individuals remain in police custody and were represented in court by Susana Ben, a lawyer from a private law firm associated with Kohli & Singh Law Firm.

Magistrate Panapasa Tawake ordered that Waqa and Lebaivalu be held in custody until their next court appearance, citing the serious nature of their alleged offenses and the public interest in the case. Authorities are still actively searching for a third suspect believed to be involved in this incident as investigations continue.

The case has drawn considerable concern within the community, particularly given the nature of the victims, who were public servants performing their duties. Acting Prime Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has voiced strong condemnation of the incident, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of civil servants. He has urged public officials working in high-risk areas to take precautions by requesting police escorts.

In light of this event, local police have assured residents of their dedication to a thorough investigation and have emphasized the importance of community support in fostering a safe environment for all. The court proceedings are set to resume on December 2nd at the Labasa High Court, where there remains hope for justice and improved safety for public officials serving in the community.
