On Veterans Day, communities across the Triangle region of North Carolina paid tribute to former service members with various heartfelt ceremonies and events. Tuesday was a day dedicated to honoring the sacrifices made by those who have served in the military, reinforcing the values of commitment and dedication that veterans embody.
Adam Svolto, an Air Force veteran, attended an event at Veterans Freedom Park in Cary, expressing his gratitude for the acknowledgment of veterans’ sacrifices. “It’s important for us to remember the commitment of servicemen and women who dedicate their lives to our safety and freedom,” he shared. Svolto reflected on his experiences flying the C-130 Hercules and emphasized the invaluable connections he made during his service. He credited his family’s military legacy for inspiring his sense of duty, highlighting the significance of community support in helping veterans transition to civilian life.
Meanwhile, at NC State, a large crowd participated in the annual run from the Memorial Belltower, with Retired Master Gunnery Sergeant Travis Johnson serving as the keynote speaker. Johnson remarked on the presence of young individuals committed to military service, noting that the sacrifices he made are now in the hands of the next generation.
In Apex, Mayor Jacques Gilbert spoke about the resilience of veterans, acknowledging their courage and discipline in facing numerous challenges. He expressed gratitude for the peace and freedom communities enjoy today because of their sacrifices.
Garner also celebrated Veterans Day with about 250 attendees at Aversboro Road Baptist Church, where residents and World War II veterans were recognized for their contributions.
The University of North Carolina added to the celebrations by unveiling an installation at the Kenan Football Center Hall of Honor, highlighting the military connections of former student-athletes and coaches. Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots, took part in the unveiling, noting the pride associated with recognizing 61 Tar Heels who served in the military. Belichick shared his personal connection to military service through his father, who enlisted during World War II after his rookie year in the NFL.
