Tim Gunn, beloved mentor from “Project Runway,” recently revealed the heartbreaking reason behind his choice to remain celibate for the past 43 years. In a candid discussion during an episode of the “Dear Chelsea” podcast, hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler, the 72-year-old shared his experience stemming from a painful breakup in his twenties.

Gunn recounted a deep nine-year relationship he had in Washington, D.C., sharing that he loved his partner profoundly. The decisive moment in their relationship arrived one night while they were watching “M*A*S*H”. His partner announced, “I have no patience for you any longer. I want you to leave.” This abrupt ending left Gunn devastated, recalling that he had to pull over while driving due to hyperventilation brought on by overwhelming emotions.

The situation became even more complex as he had to continually interact with his ex in a professional setting. In a moment of profound betrayal, his former partner confessed to being unfaithful throughout their relationship, while Gunn had remained loyal. The emotional turmoil was compounded by the looming presence of the AIDS crisis, leading Gunn to worry about his health and resulting in a decade of regular HIV testing.

While he took ten years to heal from the pain of their breakup, Gunn noted that time helped him manage his memories. He shared that moments where he considered forming new relationships flooded back with memories of his past hurt, leading him to choose celibacy. Despite the challenges, he expressed contentment with his current lifestyle, stating, “Now, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Gunn reflected on how distance from his past partner aided his healing process. After the relationship ended, he moved to New York, which opened new opportunities, including a position at Parsons School of Design that he had initially turned down while still in D.C. This move marked a significant turning point in his life, leading to a successful career in fashion and television, including his notable contributions to “Project Runway” and “Making the Cut” alongside supermodel Heidi Klum.

Remarkably, despite his successes and the prominence he has achieved, Gunn has not had any further contact with his ex, stating simply, “I haven’t heard a thing.” His experiences, though painful, have shaped his life in a way that he now views positively, emphasizing that sometimes life’s setbacks pave the way for unexpected and rewarding journeys.
