Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, the talented duo behind the animated sensation KPop Demon Hunters, have secured an exciting new project with Warner Bros. Pictures. The pair has been chosen to craft the screenplay for Tim Burton’s reimagining of the classic B-movie, Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman. Burton, known for his distinctive visual style and imaginative storytelling, will direct the film and produce alongside Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper, with LuckyChap Entertainment also involved in production and development.

Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman, originally released in 1958, tells the story of a wealthy heiress who, after a stint in a mental institution, is transformed into a giantess. The narrative delves into her struggles with her unfaithful husband and his unscrupulous lover. Warner Bros. has been working on a remake since 2024, and the project previously had Gillian Flynn, known for her work on Gone Girl, attached as the writer.

In a statement, Jimenez and McMechan expressed their enthusiasm for the project, saying, “We’re obsessed with the idea of a fifty-foot woman wreaking havoc because a man did her dirty. We have a feeling a lot of people will relate.” This fresh take promises to resonate with contemporary audiences, tapping into themes of empowerment and resilience.

The writing duo gained significant acclaim for their work on KPop Demon Hunters, which became a cultural phenomenon shortly after it was released by Sony Pictures Animation and streamed on Netflix. The film broke records to become Netflix’s most-watched film ever and produced chart-topping music that captured global attention. It has been nominated for several prestigious awards, including three Golden Globes, ten Annie Awards, and five Grammy Awards, and it recently took home accolades for Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Jimenez, a Mexican American raised in Orange County, and McMechan, who grew up near Yosemite National Park, first crossed paths at university, bonding over their shared passion for comedy and the exploration of women’s complexities. Their serendipitous introduction to the industry came after their inaugural script entered the Sundance Feature Lab, leading them to stumble upon opportunities in major productions.

Currently, the duo is working on an original series titled A Really Bad Person, which is being produced by Legendary, as well as a queer western feature. They previously developed a feature centered on Lord Farquaad for DreamWorks Animation and a biopic about Cheech & Chong. In television, they are actively contributing their talents to a forthcoming series featuring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for Apple+ and Skydance, along with serving as staff writers on the Ren & Stimpy reboot.

With their storytelling prowess and unique perspective, Jimenez and McMechan are poised to make a significant impact on the film industry, and their latest venture is sure to captivate audiences once again. They are represented by WME and Mosaic.
