Starz is set to enhance its programming with the acquisition of U.S. rights for a limited series adaptation of “Amadeus,” a compelling five-part drama based on Peter Shaffer’s acclaimed play. The series, which premiered in December on Sky in the U.K., features Will Sharpe as the legendary composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, alongside Paul Bettany portraying his rival Antonio Salieri, and Gabrielle Creevy as Mozart’s wife, Constanze Weber.

Starz Networks president Alison Hoffman expressed enthusiasm for the adaptation, stating that “Amadeus is a perfect fit for our original series lineup — a bold, character-driven reimagining of one of history’s most intoxicating rivalries.” She emphasized the show’s ability to capture the intense passion and genius of Mozart’s world, highlighting the importance of premium period dramas for Starz’s audience.

The series explores Mozart’s journey as he arrives in 18th century Vienna in pursuit of creative freedom, where he encounters Constanze and develops a contentious relationship with Salieri, which evolves from a professional rivalry to a deeply personal obsession. In addition to Sharpe, Bettany, and Creevy, the cast includes notable actors such as Rory Kinnear, Lucy Cohu, Jonathan Aris, and more, creating a rich ensemble that brings the story to life.

“Amadeus” is produced by Two Cities Television, part of STV Studios, in collaboration with Sky Studios. Joe Barton, known for his work on “Black Doves” and “Giri/Haji,” adapted the series and serves as an executive producer alongside a talented team that includes John Griffin and Megan Spanjian for Sky, as well as Sharpe, Bettany, and director Julian Farino.

This adaptation of “Amadeus” joins Starz’s impressive lineup of period dramas, which includes fan favorites like “Outlander,” “Mary & George,” “The White Queen,” and “The Spanish Princess,” promising viewers a captivating exploration of history’s most iconic figures. As the series makes its way to Starz later this year, audiences can look forward to an immersive experience reminiscent of Mozart’s legendary talents and turbulent life.
