Nintendo and Universal have unveiled the trailer for the highly anticipated “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which premiered during a Nintendo Direct livestream on Wednesday morning.

The trailer opens with a playful exchange between Mario and Luigi as they tease a tiny Bowser, who has become their pint-sized captive after consuming a Mini Mushroom in the previous film. After an amusing attempt by Bowser to paint a romantic portrait of himself alongside Princess Peach, the plot kicks into gear. Following a spectacular display of shooting stars, Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Toad embark on an interstellar adventure reminiscent of the beloved “Super Mario Galaxy” video game. Their journey takes them to various planets, including a water world and a desert planet featuring upside-down pyramids inspired by 2017’s “Super Mario Odyssey,” where the brothers expertly race on bikes.

The heroes encounter Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, and meet the formidable Princess Rosalina, portrayed by Brie Larson. Bowser Jr. wields a magical paintbrush, reminiscent of the character from the 2002 game “Super Mario Sunshine,” allowing him to shield himself in metal and launch attacks. Meanwhile, Rosalina showcases her powers by defeating a spider-like robot solo with her magic wand.

Returning to reprise their roles are stars Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Charlie Day (Luigi).

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is adapted from the iconic 2007 “Super Mario Galaxy” game on the Nintendo Wii, considered by many as one of the greatest video games of all time. Although specific plot details remain sparse, the original game centered on Mario’s quest across the cosmos to collect Power Stars necessary to reach the universe’s center, where Bowser has captured Princess Peach.

Following the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” released in April 2023 and grossing an impressive $1.3 billion worldwide, the expectations are high for this sequel. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel returning as the screenwriter.

Set to hit theaters in April 2026, the excitement surrounding the film continues to build as fans eagerly await its release.
