Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially set to reprise their iconic roles in a new installment of the beloved “The Mummy” franchise. After extensive negotiations, Universal Pictures has confirmed that the duo will return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell in the highly anticipated action horror comedy, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence.
Universal has also announced a release date for the film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 19, 2028. While specific plot details remain undisclosed, fans are eager to see how the characters, made famous in the original trilogy from 1999 to 2008, will be integrated into this new story.
David Coggeshall, known for his work on “The Family Plan” and “Orphan: First Kill,” has penned the screenplay for this upcoming feature. The production team includes Sean Daniel, who produced the early films alongside his late partner James Jacks, as well as William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein, who are also contributors through Project X Entertainment. This team previously collaborated with Radio Silence on the recent successful “Scream” films, which have significantly rejuvenated the horror franchise for today’s audience.
Brendan Fraser, alongside Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart from Hivemind, will serve as executive producers. The project is being overseen by Jay Polidoro and Jacqueline Garell from Universal’s production development team.
The original “Mummy” film, released in May 1999, brought a unique blend of adventure, romance, and horror while capturing the essence of classic Universal Monster movies. Fraser’s portrayal of a daring treasure hunter and Weisz’s role as an intrepid librarian captivated audiences, contributing to the film’s impressive box office success of over $422.5 million. The franchise later expanded to include a prequel, “The Scorpion King,” as well as an animated series and even a popular theme park ride at Universal Studios Hollywood.
The enduring popularity of “The Mummy” has demonstrated Universal’s strong legacy with monster movies, raking in over $1.8 billion globally. This new film represents a promising opportunity to reintroduce these beloved characters to audiences, generating excitement among fans who have been eager for a fresh take on the franchise. As anticipation builds for the 2028 release, the revival of Fraser and Weisz’s roles marks a nostalgic return to the series that solidified their status as A-list stars in Hollywood.
