Thanksgiving Travel Chaos Looms as Minnesota Braces for Major Winter Storm

A significant winter storm is set to hit Minnesota on Tuesday morning, coinciding with one of the busiest travel periods for the Thanksgiving holiday. KARE 11 has issued a Weather Impact Alert effective from noon on Tuesday until noon on Wednesday, as the storm system moves in from the west and has the potential to deliver substantial snowfall, particularly in the northern regions of the state.

Forecasts indicate that northern Minnesota could see between 8 to 9 inches of snow, particularly affecting areas from Alexandria to Grand Rapids, including Brainerd and Bemidji. Central Minnesota is expected to experience mostly snow, with an initial mix of rain. The line of heavy snow is projected to lower visibility significantly, particularly on Tuesday evening as the storm peaks.

As the storm approaches around 8 a.m. Tuesday and persists into Wednesday midday, many travelers will be impacted by deteriorating weather conditions. KARE 11’s meteorologist John Zeigler emphasizes the importance of timing and travel direction during this period. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated along a path extending from Alexandria through Duluth, where snowfall may reach 4 to 8 inches. Central areas, including St. Cloud, are expected to receive approximately 3 to 6 inches, while the Twin Cities metro may see about 1 to 3 inches, with southern regions likely receiving less than an inch.

Compounding the situation, temperatures are expected to plunge from the 40s at around 4 p.m. Tuesday to the 20s by 10 p.m., causing any lingering rainfall to turn into snow. As a result, icy road conditions may pose challenges for Wednesday morning commuters, even in the southern parts of the state.

This weather system serves as a reminder for travelers to plan accordingly, stay informed, and allow for extra travel time to ensure safety during Thanksgiving travels.
