Thailand has announced plans to release 18 detained Cambodian soldiers once peace is restored, following a ceasefire agreement reached after days of conflict along their shared border. The statement was made by a Thai official on Saturday, marking a significant step toward resolution between the two nations.
The truce was established after extensive discussions held during the General Border Committee (GBC) meetings in Chanthaburi province, Thailand. This ceasefire took effect at noon local time and will be monitored by both parties over a 72-hour period. The Thai government was mindful of the potential economic consequences and its international standing, which influenced its decision to pursue this agreement.
Thai Defense Minister Gen. Nattaphon Narkphanit expressed optimism at a press conference, stating that once stability returns, civilians can safely return to their homes, and the detained soldiers will be freed. Thailand also anticipates that Cambodian authorities will facilitate the safe return of Thai citizens currently in Cambodia.
