Billy Horschel reflects on the excitement surrounding the tech-enhanced indoor TGL Golf League, which had its inaugural season last year. As the league prepares to kick off its second season this Sunday, the initial curiosity has transformed into optimism and growth.

This season promises several upgrades, including improved graphics and enhanced spectator experiences. Attendees at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, will enjoy ear buds designed to help them better engage with the commentary during matches. Notably, prominent golf course designers, such as Jack Nicklaus, Gil Hanse, and Beau Welling, are creating unique holes, with each team boasting a signature hole that represents their respective city.

The season opener features a rematch of last year’s championship, where the Atlanta Drive triumphed over New York in a series of close matches. Horschel is a key member of the Atlanta team, though they will compete without Justin Thomas, who is currently recovering from a back injury. Horschel expressed his enthusiasm for the league, describing it as a refreshing change from the routine of the PGA Tour after 16 years. “The monotonous grind can wear on you a bit, but being part of TGL rekindles that fire and brings kid-like energy,” he noted.

The league’s structure remains stable, with six teams still intact. However, early in the season, Jupiter Links will be without Tiger Woods as he recuperates from back surgery, and he has indicated he will miss the initial matches. The Detroit team is set to debut in 2027, and discussions are underway for potential expansions, possibly including Scottie Scheffler.

Matches are primarily scheduled for Monday and Tuesday evenings, starting this Sunday, Dec. 28, with Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common playing next on Jan. 2. Horschel mentioned that as the PGA Tour prepares to overhaul its schedule in 2027, it may ease scheduling conflicts for players, potentially increasing participation in TGL. He believes these changes could attract players who previously opted out, thus enhancing the league’s competitive landscape.

With its innovative approach and collaboration with top golfers and designers, TGL represents a significant evolution in the sport, promising a thrilling experience for players and fans alike.
