The dramatic spectacle came from the luxury Fairmont hotel across the water, which was damaged in a retaliatory strike launched by Iran amid escalating tensions in the region.
“We were taken aback. I couldn’t believe it. What is happening?” Karen Carifee recounted. The strike was part of Iran’s response to recent attacks from the U.S. and Israel, and while officials from the United Arab Emirates reported that air attacks were being intercepted, damage and debris on the ground resulted in significant disturbances.
Earlier in the day, the couple had been blissfully unaware of how the geopolitical situation could affect their vacation. Having enjoyed a hot air balloon ride and a visit to the Dubai Miracle Garden, they only realized the gravity of the situation when the booms echoed and smoke visible in the distance signaled something was amiss.
Unfortunately for the Carifees, their plans took an unexpected turn as their cruise on the Celestyal Journey, set to depart from Doha, Qatar, was canceled due to the unfolding crisis. Now, they are stuck in Dubai, having to extend their stay at the luxurious Waldorf Astoria on Palm Jumeirah while seeking an exit strategy.
Despite their attempts to contact U.S. government representatives for assistance, the couple reported minimal help from officials, echoing frustrations felt by many Americans in the region. Karen expressed her disappointment that while the British government was making plans to help its citizens, there was no clear communication from U.S. authorities regarding evacuation.
President Trump mentioned that the situation developed rapidly but affirmed that the U.S. State Department is actively arranging charter flights to facilitate the departure of American citizens from the Middle East, including the UAE. However, the couple’s recent experiences with the State Department’s hotline yielded only vague replies, leaving them feeling stranded and anxious.
