In a crucial playoff matchup, Trent Brown, the veteran offensive tackle for the Houston Texans, is tentatively set to play against the New England Patriots despite battling a persistent ankle injury. Limited to just one practice this week, the 32-year-old player has been listed as questionable, following a season where he also contended with a knee injury that sidelined him for the last two games of the regular season.
Brown’s return to the field proved impactful, as he played the entire game during the Texans’ AFC wild-card win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. When healthy, the Texans’ offensive line comprises Brown at right tackle, flanked by Aireontae Ersery, Tytus Howard, Jake Andrews, and Ed Ingram, forming a formidable front.
However, the Texans will face a significant challenge with the absence of Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins, officially ruled out for Sunday’s game after suffering a concussion during Monday’s clash with the Steelers. Collins, who has been a standout performer for the team, accumulating 71 receptions for 1,117 yards this past season, will need to clear NFL concussion protocol to return to action.
His teammates have expressed support throughout the process, emphasizing the importance of Collins’ health. Wide receiver Christian Kirk remarked on the team’s solidarity, stating, “We’re here for him… whenever he’s back, we’ll obviously all be happy he’s back.” The Texans are not only missing Collins but also Justin Watson, who is in the concussion protocol.
To bolster their receiving corps, the Texans are expected to activate Braxton Berrios for the playoff game. Berrios, who has seen limited action this season with just six catches for 37 yards, is a seasoned player with experience from his time with the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. His involvement could provide much-needed depth for the Texans as they tackle the Patriots.
The injury to Collins, known for his physical style of play, came after a frightening incident where he was carted off the field. As he attempted to make a catch, a hard fall caused him to hit his head on the turf, leading to immediate concerns about his wellbeing. This marks his second concussion of the season, underscoring the serious nature of head injuries in professional football.
Despite these setbacks, the Texans are optimistic about their depth on the roster. Kirk stepped up significantly in Collins’ absence against the Steelers, catching eight passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback C.J. Stroud expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt, stating, “We just got to know what else we can do and try to build with the guys we have.”
With the playoffs in full swing, the Texans are poised to rely on their collective talent and experience as they look to advance further, hoping for the return of Collins to bolster their postseason campaign.
