Allegations have emerged regarding inmate Tevita Qaqanivalu, who is accused of sending inappropriate text messages directed at the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice. This incident has resulted in the cancellation of his scheduled family visit and has triggered a wider investigation by the Fiji Corrections Service.

Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Auta Moceisuva, confirmed that Qaqanivalu is disqualified from family visits due to persistent disciplinary problems and failure to adhere to prison regulations. Moceisuva remarked, “Tevita Qaqanivalu does not qualify for family visit due to his constant misbehavior and uncooperative attitude towards lawful authority.”

The investigation is primarily centered on the vulgar messages purportedly sent to the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, raising serious concerns about the potential smuggling and use of mobile phones within the prison system. Such breaches could undermine essential security protocols within correctional facilities.

While details of the investigation have not been disclosed, Moceisuva affirmed that the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness and will be resolved in accordance with established Corrections policies and procedural norms. This incident underscores the ongoing difficulties that correctional facilities encounter in ensuring security and order, particularly with respect to unauthorized communication by inmates. The commitment to addressing such issues reflects a proactive approach to maintaining integrity within the corrections system.
