A tense confrontation occurred on Wednesday evening outside Manhattan’s Park East Synagogue, where approximately 200 anti-Zionist demonstrators gathered to protest an event hosted by Nefesh B’Nefesh, an organization dedicated to supporting Jewish immigration to Israel. The protesters chanted inflammatory slogans, such as “Death to the IDF” and “We don’t want no Zionists here,” while also urging the mobilization of global support for an intifada.
The demonstration escalated when one of the organizers called for increased pressure on Jewish institutions, claiming, “It is our duty to make them think twice before holding these events. We need to make them scared.” This rhetoric contributed to a charged atmosphere, as members of the gathering exchanged insults with a smaller group of Jewish counter-protesters who assembled across the street, segregated by police and metal barricades.
The counter-protesters, although outnumbered, responded with loud horns and whistles, leading to further mutual accusations of intimidation. He highlighted the painful irony of the situation, noting that the synagogue’s senior rabbi is a Holocaust survivor who witnessed similar expressions of hatred during Kristallnacht. “Today, he sees outside his own synagogue the same hatred that smashed the windows of synagogues in Berlin and Vienna in 1938,” the rabbi remarked, emphasizing that such actions transcend geopolitical issues and target the Jewish community directly.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in New York also condemned the event, labeling it as a blatant act of antisemitism. They expressed concern for the safety of the local community, underscoring that no one should face such profound hatred while visiting a house of worship or walking the streets of New York City.
