The Tailevu Rugby Football Union has implemented significant measures against Korocawiri (Ovea) Rugby Club and Natakali Rugby Club following an incident during their Semi-Final match at the 2026 Tailevu Rugby 10s tournament held on February 28 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

In an official statement, Tailevu Rugby Union President Joseph Rodan Snr recognized that while challenges are inherent in sports, it is essential for clubs and supporters to exhibit positive behavior both on and off the field. After consultations with the Games Coordinator, Games Committee, Tailevu Referee Association, and Executive Committee representatives, the decision was made to award the match to Natakali Rugby Club after Korocawiri (Ovea) Rugby Club abandoned the game just one minute before full time while trailing.

Each of the involved clubs will incur a cash fine and receive a final written warning. Rodan indicated that any repeat offenses could lead to termination or expulsion from all competitions sanctioned by the Tailevu Rugby Football Union. He underscored the vital role these clubs play in youth development and community engagement through rugby, highlighting how sports can promote discipline, unity, and constructive social pathways.

To strengthen adherence to the principles of rugby, the Union will guide these clubs in upholding World Rugby Values and the Code of Conduct, with official correspondence sent out on March 2, 2026.

Moreover, the Tailevu Rugby Union expressed appreciation for the presence of the Fiji Police Force and Forces Training Group Rugby Team, whose involvement was crucial in maintaining order during the incident.

Responding to the situation, Fiji Rugby Union Board Chairman John Sanday reinforced that rugby in Fiji transcends sport; it serves as a fundamental pillar of discipline and an agent for positive change in society. He stated that any behavior counteracting these values is unacceptable. Sanday also affirmed the Fiji Rugby Union’s respect for the Tailevu Rugby Union’s internal disciplinary process while vowing to remind all provincial unions that such conduct has no place in the sport. He called on all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring that rugby venues remain safe and respectful environments that embody the true spirit of Fijian rugby.

The Tailevu Rugby Union is dedicated to maintaining discipline and respect while supporting the ongoing development of rugby within the region, highlighting its commitment to fostering a positive environment in sports.
