Sydney Sweeney is undergoing a remarkable transformation for her role as Christy Martin in the forthcoming film centered around the life of the pioneering boxer. Not only has the actress altered her physical appearance for the part, but she has also committed to an intensive training regimen and diet, alongside a unique touch of personal history by utilizing her grandmother’s shed for her workouts.

In a recent appearance on “Good Morning America,” Sweeney, 28, shared her excitement for the role, emphasizing that it is Martin’s inspiring story that truly resonates with her. “She was a professional boxer who came up during a time when women in the sport was unpopular. She was a trailblazer for women boxers,” Sweeney highlighted. The narrative takes a darker turn as it explores Martin’s tumultuous relationship with her trainer, who becomes abusive, ultimately leading to Martin’s struggle to break free and embrace her true love, a woman.

Reflecting on her dedication to portray Martin authentically, Sweeney expressed her enthusiasm during her initial meeting with the film’s director, declaring, “I don’t care, I want to produce this. I just want to be a part of telling her story and hopefully opening doors for other people.”

To prepare, Sweeney gained 35 pounds through a combination of rigorous workouts and “protein shake after protein shake.” Drawing inspiration from her upbringing in Idaho, she transformed her grandmother’s shed into her personal training facility, equipped with flooring and boxing bags. Her regimen included weight training in the mornings and boxing sessions lasting two to three hours daily.

Sweeney was privileged to have the real Christy Martin on set, recalling fond memories of their collaboration, especially during fight scenes. “I could hear her at the bottom of the ring going, ‘Hit her with a left hook!’” Sweeney recounted with laughter, recalling the invaluable guidance Martin provided.

In addition to her film role, the actress hinted at what fans can expect from the upcoming season of HBO’s “Euphoria.” “The only thing I can say is it’s about God,” Sweeney teased, alluding to significant themes that will resonate throughout the series.

With the holiday season approaching, Sweeney shared her plans to host a “Shrek”-themed Friendsgiving party, where guests will dress as various fairy tale characters from the beloved movie.

“Christy” is set to hit theaters on Friday, November 6, presenting a compelling narrative about resilience, love, and the fight against adversity—a story that aims to inspire many.
