Suva is currently facing a notable surge in population, which is putting considerable strain on the city’s infrastructure. The demands for upgraded services are becoming increasingly critical, especially at the overcrowded bus terminals, indicating an urgent need for expansion.

Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Local Government, has highlighted that the influx of people migrating to the capital necessitates significant upgrades to the existing infrastructure. He pointed out that the congested state of the bus terminals reflects the pressures on the system. To tackle this pressing issue, plans are in motion to construct a new Terminal 4, aimed at alleviating congestion and accommodating the growing number of commuters.

The project is currently in the initial planning phases, with city council officials in discussions with potential investors. Minister Nalumisa expects that more information regarding funding, timelines, and design aspects will be made available by the end of the year.

He stressed the importance of developing a comprehensive infrastructure strategy to meet the escalating urban demands. “As you look around, the bus terminals are crowded, so we need an extra terminal. That’s why this plan is in place—to meet the growing demand over the next 10 years, as well as the next 20 years,” said Nalumisa.

In addition to alleviating transport issues, the proposed terminal is envisioned as a modern, double-storey structure that will enhance Suva’s urban landscape. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, has also expressed strong support for the initiative, underscoring its significance for travelers heading towards western destinations and maritime regions.

As Suva continues to expand each year, the initiative for Terminal 4 illustrates the government’s proactive approach to preparing the city for future growth and addressing congestion before it becomes a more significant concern. This strategic development not only seeks to improve public transport but also to enhance the overall image and functionality of the city’s infrastructure, fostering a more sustainable urban environment for its residents.
